Wang A/AC Destruction News
President Stanley's Lie Now Visible

Please click here to read the letter Asian and Asian American club Presidents sent to President Stanley expressing their opposition to the Toll Drive dorms and asking to meet with him to discuss it. He ignored them.

Then-student Melanie Tiongson said the dorms were "like a slap in the face to my culture" and reminiscent of the days when people of color like her were "shafted for the benefit of something allegedly 'greater.'"

On this vast campus where 6-story dorms could have been built in many empty spaces, instead, an all-White building committee, never thinking of the consequences, chose directly behind Wang AAC.

Rather than even having the common courtesy to speak to those opposed, Stanley let construction proceed. Having already applied for the Penn State presidency, and later Cornell, he had no long term interest in SBU. His goal was to be gone before the dorms were complete. Regretfully, no other school wanted him.

Where once the pagoda tower stood alone against the sky, making SBU the only SUNY campus with such an iconic structure it can be recognized just by that icon, it is now blocked from most sides. Where it is not, the bright stadium lights or dorm lights can be seen. The one concession to reduce the height is that the new dorms have been built one story into the earth.

Already rated one of the ugliest campuses in the US, with red brick buildings designed by prison architects Kelly & Gruzen, the one building that gave SBU character has been aesthetically destroyed. While from one and a half directions its pagoda tower still stands visibly alone, the beauty and serenity of its koi pond garden and the use of its special theatre windows have been lost - forever.

              Different But the Same:
              The Asian Immigrant Story
              by Demi Guo, SB Press

"Picture a piece of glass, representing an ocean, standing between two students. One is the tuháo, who studies vigorously but can afford to go to school in America and drive a Mercedes. His future is secure. The other is the huáý, the descendant of Chinese immigrants. He studies vigorously, but he has taken out loans or accepted scholarship to pay for college.... That is the difference 36 years has made since the statesman Deng Xiaoping opened China’s doors... That is the great irony of the Chinese American."
